HISTORY OF GEARHART
Welcome to Gearhart — a quiet coastal gem with a rich past and a warm sense of community. Long before visitors found their way to this peaceful stretch of the Oregon Coast, the area we now call Gearhart was home to the Clatsop people, a branch of the Chinook Nation who lived, fished, and traded along the coastline for generations.

Gearhart itself began to take shape in the late 1800s, named after Phillip Gearhart, one of the first settlers in the area. He arrived in 1848 and claimed land under the Donation Land Claim Act. In time, the lush forests, open beaches, and nearby estuaries drew in new families, beachcombers, and eventually vacationers from Portland and beyond. The town became a quiet getaway, treasured for its natural beauty, slower pace, and close-knit community.

At the heart of this transformation was the rise of transportation — especially the development of what we now know as U.S. Highway 101. Known as the “Pacific Coast Scenic Byway,” Highway 101 opened up the Oregon Coast to easier travel and trade in the early 20th century. Its route through Gearhart helped connect this small town to the larger network of coastal communities. Today, Highway 101 remains the lifeline of the Oregon Coast — a place where history, people, and places meet every day.

Our restaurant sits right on this historic highway — a nod to both tradition and movement. Whether you're a longtime local, a weekend visitor, or a traveler headed down the coast, we hope PK becomes a regular stop for you.

Gearhart has never been about fast growth or big crowds. It’s about consistency, comfort, and community. That’s exactly what we strive for here at PK — to be part of the rhythm of local life, one meal at a time.
